Powder metal conquers the oil industry

The steel wholesaler Sverdrup Hanssen Spesialstål is distributor for Bodycote Hot Isostaic Pressing AB’s HIP products. The HIP products are exotic products, and relatively new in a commercial context.

- This is metal material, produced according to the customers’ specifications. The production method becomes more cost effective, compared to other production methods, the more advanced geometry the desired end-result has. Because of this HIP products are usually metal material with a complex geometrical shape, says Tobias Erevik, business developer at the steel wholesaler Sverdrup Hanssen Spesialstål.

The advantages of HIP products are many. The large freedom of design means that the need for welding seams is reduced.

- At the same time, material wastage is reduced significantly. Traditionally, complex shapes require significant machining work with an accordant waste of materials, Erevik says.

Normal products are hubs and manifolds. The material is just as strong in all directions, with a finer microstructure that in practice removes the danger of hydrogen embrittlement.
- Hydrogen induced cracking, or hydrogen embrittlement, which is a well-known problem within parts of the oil industry, is not an issue when it comes to HIP products, Erevik says.

The company has recently acquired a number of large customers within the oil and gas segment.

- The subsea industry in particular has discovered the HIP products’ many advantages, says Erevik.
